The eclectic Indo-Saracenic style of the gateway is a combination of Gothic Revival with several Indian and Islamic motifs. The extravaganza of the British colonial power in India left behind many architectural monuments as a legacy of their supremacy. The fabrication of architectural memorials by various British agencies created British landmarks that mixed “nativized” adaptations of Indian design with the forms and expressions of British “home” culture. The Gateway of India is an arch monument built during the 20th century in Bombay, India. The monument was erected to commemorate the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder on their visit to India in 1911.
